Jake is 50cm tall. Mike is 12cm taller than Jake. Tim is 11cm taller than Mike. How tall is Tim?

You do (50+12)+11             to get Tim's height. 
               Mike  Plus Taller

Easy, right? Except that it is like 2 ft tall...
