Why are only inherited traits, not acquired ones, necessary for the process of natural selection?

Inherited traits are the traits that are passed on generation to generation, meaning you are born with these traits. And natural selection is the concept of "survival of the fittest" where the organisms with the best adapted traits in an environment live long enough to pass on that best adapted trait to their offspring.
