This is known as the TROPOSPHERE. The troposphere is the region that touches the earth's surface and is the layer where plants and animals live. The troposphere extends to around 17 kilometers around the equator and to around 6-8 kilometers around the poles. Temperature decreases with increasing altitude in the troposphere.
