I believe some have started referring to America as a "salad bowl" rather than a "melting pot." The original phrase suggests that all the different ethnicity's blend into one seamlessly, while in truth they stay completely distinct and rather contribute to the whole with their diversity--rather than "melting" flawlessly into society.
