The Sun´s gravitational pole is very strong. This causes all the planets to stay in orbit. This strong gravity, alongside the Moon´s gravity, causes our tides. The same side of the Moon is always facing Earth. Because of this, as the moon orbits around the Earth, at different times we only see part of the lit-up side of the Moon (the side the Sun illuminates).
