First we need to find the common denominator for 8 and 12.

8 = 8, 16, 24

12 = 12, 24

So we have 24 as our common denominator.

5 3/8 =   5  9/24

2 3/12 = 3  6/24   now we can add.

              8   15/24

So that would be your answer 8 15/24
