it is so because instead of producing energy in the form of ATP, Mitochondria also helps in cellular respiration. The multi-compartment structure of the mitochondrion is useful for respiration as it allows the separation between different kind of reactions. It also helps in maintaining the concentration of different molecules in its multi compartments.
